New software to alert users when they reach their data use limits

Canadian mobile personalization provider Bridgewater Systems unveiled tools to help mobile operators prevent "bill shock" for customers. Typically occurring when users incur large data roaming charges when traveling or downloading applications or content, some users prefer to stop using such services altogether rather than face an exorbitant bill said David Sharpley, Senior Vice President, Bridgewater Systems.
To help users, some governments have introduced legislation to require mobile operators to inform users if they hit a certain percentage of their limit. The subscriber then has the option to continue to use the services knowing that they are going to exceed their quotas and incur the additional charges. The software would allow users or an IT manager to customize usage at levels they are comfortable with and ensure that they are not surprised by the bill at the end of the month.
According to the company, they are in talks with a number of telcos as the backend system needs to be in place for the client software to work. Sharpley also said that the company is adamant that the solution will not harm the revenue of telcos but will instead empower customers with the courage to roam or use applications.
Currently available for both the iPhone and Blackberry devices, Sharpley said that there were plans in the pipeline to release the application for both Symbian and Android based devices sometime this year.
