Just prior to the the opening of CommunicAsia in Singapore, Samsung took the covers off it's new smartphone, the Jet, which it claims offers users the "very best in speed, power, and dominant performance".

The touchscreen smartphone measures 109x54x12mm and features a 3.1in WVGA AMOLED display. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync ensures users can access their email clients from the handset while HSDPA offers speedy internet access at a speed of up to 3.6Mbps.

The phone comes bundled with Samsung's Dolphin web browser that allows users to view up to five web pages at one time, bookmark their favourite websites as widgets on the phone's homepage and even block adverts.

Other features include a 5Mp camera with face detection and blink detection technology, video capture and playback capabilities, built-in AGPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Samsung Jet has a 2GB internal memory and will also support microSD cards up to 16GB.

There was also a showing of their planned rival to the HTC Android based phones, the Samsung Galaxy.

The Galaxy has a 3.2-inch AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen, GPS, a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording video, and a scratch-resistant touchscreen that's made of tempered glass. Like other Android handsets, the Galaxy includes access to the Android Market and a range of Google's services, including Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.

The Galaxy doesn't have a physical keyboard, but the screen is equipped with haptic feedback that's activated when the virtual QWERTY keyboard is displayed, giving users a degree of physical feedback when they type. Unlike HTC's Android handsets, the Galaxy doesn't have a trackball. Instead it has five physical buttons and a directional keypad.

The lack of a physical QWERTY keyboard and the use of an AMOLED display, which doesn't require a backlight, helps to make Samsung's Galaxy very slim. The Galaxy handset is slimmer than HTC's Magic and the iPhone 3G.
