Media giant adopts desktop virtualization to support needs of mobile workers

Hong Kong-headquartered media company Phoenix TV has adopted desktop virtualization platform Citrix XenDesktop in a bid to provide a world-class user experience to the company’s many mobile workers. The move rounds out a series of earlier Citrix deployments that started with application virtualization solution Citrix XenApp and progressed to cloud platform Citrix NetScaler, an application delivery controller. As well as dramatically improving the user experience, the company aims to simplify the management of its infrastructure and reduce the number of applications it needs to run for its IT systems to work effectively.

Phoenix TV is a well-known name in Hong Kong and Greater China. Established in 1996, the company was one of Hong Kong’s earliest satellite broadcasters. Since then, its operations have expanded into new media, the internet, mobile content and information, and print publications, and it is broadcast in over 150 countries and regions. As a broadcaster, its credibility is founded on its ability to deliver incisive and up-to-the-minute content, 24 hours a day. Having totally reliable IT systems in place is critical.

“I’m delighted that Citrix continues to play a part in the success of our cloud deployment,” said Wang Hongbo, Deputy Director of Information and Network Management, Phoenix TV. “The whole organisation benefits from having a highly responsive and user-friendly virtual desktop infrastructure. At the same time, maintaining the system has also become simpler for my department, enabling us to achieve more. Overall, this increased efficiency reduces the total cost of ownership to the company.”

Citrix XenDesktop delivers Windows apps and desktops as secure mobile services, enabling IT to mobilise the business while reducing costs by centralising security and control.

Complemented by XenApp, XenDesktop can deliver full desktops or just the apps to any device. First launched in 2007, Citrix has continually upgraded the solution and added new functionality since then and, earlier this year, the company announced the launch of the latest release of the solution, XenDesktop 7.5, which became available at the beginning of this month. The latest generation of the product simplifies virtual desktop delivery and Windows app delivery to an increasingly mobile workforce. It is now easier than ever for companies to leverage the elasticity of hybrid clouds and the security of mobile device management, all within a single, user-friendly platform.

Alongside the new XenDesktop release, Citrix has also unveiled a new version of XenApp (also version 7.5). The latest version is optimised for enterprise mobility and the cloud. It features the highly-acclaimed FlexCast Management Architecture that drives down the costs and complexity of virtualizing five generations of Windows apps and delivering them to users on any mobile, desktop or thin client device.
