Mobile POS system launches in Hong Kong

MasterCard and First Data Corporation have launched Pogo> Mobile Point-of-Sale (MPOS) in Hong Kong that will enhance the mobile payment experience for merchants and consumers. Insurance firm The Prudential Assurance Company Limited Hong Kong (Prudential) is the first enterprise Pogo>  MPOS client in Hong Kong launching the service across its agency and bancassurance sales force to offer customers additional choice and convenience.

First Data’s Pogo> is a MPOS payment solution, the first to be introduced by MasterCard and First Data in Hong Kong. Pogo> is an MPOS card reader that enables credit and debit signature card acceptance anywhere with wireless coverage, and via web-enabled mobile devices or tablets with smart capabilities and a mobile application. The product will be distributed by First Data Merchant Solutions, First Data’s direct-to-market merchant acquiring business.

The deployment of MPOS solutions has been significant over the past few years. MasterCard estimated that throughout 2010 and 2011, approximately 1.2 million MPOS solutions were shipped to MasterCard merchants globally. It is worth noting that about 75 percent of those merchants did not previously accept card payments, a healthy indication that MPOS has provided an alternative payment environment to enhance both the retail and payment experience for merchants and customers alike.

The companies say Pogo> features the highest level of security certification – EMV Level 2 – while maintaining a simple user experience. Cardholder data is never stored on the mobile devices so that consumers can enjoy a more flexible and secure payment experience.

No additional phone line is required as it uses the merchant’s existing mobile phone connection. Payments can be processed in real time, resulting in fast and efficient funding of merchants’ bank accounts.

“Hong Kong is a fast-paced city. Everything is about efficiency. When it comes to payment, local consumers and large organizations like retailers and insurance companies opt for a fast and secure experience. That is why introducing new ways to make payment easier and faster is important for commerce in our city,” said Kevin Goldmintz, Head of Hong Kong & Macau, MasterCard. “We see tremendous potential for further expansion in the MPOS space and are glad to partner with First Data to introduce MPOS solution to Hong Kong for the first time. With our strong and solid experience in the payment industry and in MPOS development, MasterCard aims to lead the way to a world beyond cash, transforming the purchasing experience by making payments seamless, safe, simple and smart.”

“Across the world we are seeing significant changes in consumer payment preferences. Mobile POS devices can play a significant role in helping businesses offer their customers an easy and secure way to pay for goods and services,” said Amrish Rau, General Manager, First Data Merchant Solutions. “We feel that our deep experience and knowledge of the global payment landscape, combined with the support of MasterCard, our go-to-market partner, will provide value-added services for merchants such as Prudential, our first enterprise client.”

“At Prudential, our aim is to provide customers with choice and convenience. The addition of MPOS into our existing range of payment options not only reinforces our continuous quest to enhance customer service but also enables our sales force to deliver their service in a speedy, professional and secure manner,” said Derek Yung, Chief Executive Officer, Prudential.

The Pogo> MPOS solution is now available for selected industry sectors in Hong Kong, including food and beverage, hospitality, insurance, healthcare and retail.

Currently available in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, First Data’s Pogo> MPOS solution meets the MasterCard best practices for mobile point-of-sale acceptance as outlined by MasterCard in 2012.
